Rifugio di Mare is conveniently accessible from Alghero Airport, which is just a 5.6-mile taxi ride costing around €30 (based on 2022 rates). After a two-hour flight from Bratislava, we took a break at Porto Conte Marina to enjoy some food and drinks while waiting for the hotel’s golf cart service.
It’s important to call the hotel 30 minutes before arrival since private cars are not allowed in the nature park where the hotel is located. While waiting, we were serenaded by the amazing sound of cicadas, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.
The golf cart ride to the hotel took about 10 minutes, offering stunning views of the surrounding nature and the sea, making the arrival experience truly memorable.
Room
We stayed in a Superior Triple Room with a sea view at Rifugio di Mare. The room is situated in a renovated bunker from the Second World War, combining rustic elements of wood and rock. While the decor and structure reflect the building’s historic roots, it’s important not to expect luxury accommodations.
The air conditioning is solar-powered, so it doesn’t operate at night, which might be a consideration for those who prefer a cooler sleeping environment. Additionally, all rooms are on the ground floor, so while the views are pleasant, they are not as elevated or expansive as one might hope.
Food and Drinks
The breakfast at Rifugio di Mare is quite basic, reflecting the challenge of transporting food to the hotel’s remote location, accessible only by golf cart. During the day, the restaurant is not operational, so guests can only order drinks or coffee.
However, you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the stunning views, making it a pleasant spot to relax.
One afternoon, we enjoyed a delightful five-course dinner featuring freshly prepared fish, dining outside with the sunset as a beautiful backdrop. This experience highlighted the hotel’s ability to create special culinary moments despite its logistical constraints.
Facilities
Rifugio di Mare offers a more rustic experience without the typical luxury amenities. There is no spa, swimming pool, or beachfront access directly at the hotel.
The nearest beach is a 30-minute walk away. Additionally, there are no facilities such as playgrounds for kids, sunbeds, or a gym. This hotel is more suited for those seeking a peaceful, nature-focused retreat rather than a resort-style experience.
Nearby Activities
This is why you book Rifugio di Mare and why you will love it. You can rent an electric bicycle and take a trip to the beach, or enjoy a 30-minute walk to Cala Bramassa Beach with scenic views along the way. The beach is usually quite secluded, offering a tranquil experience, though you should be mindful of jellyfish if it’s the season.
I personally enjoyed running in the park, surrounded by stunning views and nature. The sunsets are breathtaking, adding to the serene ambiance.
Additionally, history enthusiasts can explore the numerous bunkers from the Second World War, with Batteria del Lliri being the closest. These bunkers, scattered around the area and even on the beaches, double as unique sunbeds.
The peace and silence, with no cars, planes, or crowds—just the sound of the sea—make this a perfect retreat for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

David’s View: 8/10
I love this hotel. While I typically prefer amenities like a pool, spa, beachfront, gym, and an all-inclusive restaurant, sometimes it’s refreshing to try something different, and you won’t regret it.
Rifugio di Mare offers unique experiences and peaceful surroundings that created wonderful memories for me. As a fan of WWII history, this hotel, with its renovated bunkers, was particularly excellent for me.

During our stay at the Rifugio di Mare Hotel, Karina had a few notable experiences and observations. Despite the tranquil ambiance and picturesque surroundings, she did encounter some inconveniences.
One aspect she found less appealing was the lack of a working restaurant during the day, which made it challenging to find meals without venturing out. Additionally, the beach, although beautiful, was farther away than expected, which was slightly inconvenient.
However, Karina found solace in the peaceful environment and the opportunity to connect with nature. She particularly enjoyed savoring coffee and San Pellegrino with ice while taking in the stunning sea views.
These moments of quiet reflection, surrounded by the serene landscape, were highlights of her stay. The tranquility and natural beauty of the location provided a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
